EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-supported therapy that helps people process and reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories. During EMDR sessions, a therapist guides bilateral stimulation through eye movements or tapping while the client focuses on distressing images, beliefs, and body sensations. This helps the brain reprocess stuck memories, reduce intense emotional responses, and build more adaptive beliefs. Trauma counseling using EMDR is typically structured, goal-focused, and can produce meaningful relief in fewer sessions than some other approaches. It’s safe and effective for many types of trauma, including single-incident events, complex or childhood trauma, and PTSD. A trained clinician will tailor the approach to each person’s needs and pace.
